Cyclosporin, the active ingredient in Cyclosporin Drops, primarily exerts its immunosuppressive effect by forming a complex with cyclophilin, a cytosolic protein found in T-lymphocytes. This drug-protein complex inhibits calcineurin, a calcium-dependent phosphatase enzyme. By blocking calcineurin, cyclosporin prevents the dephosphorylation and nuclear translocation of the nuclear factor of activated T cells (NF-AT), which is essential for the transcription of specific cytokine genes, such as interleukin-2 (IL-2). This inhibition suppresses T-cell activation and proliferation, thereby reducing the immune response in the targeted area.
