Amlodipine is a medication that prevents calcium ions from entering into cardiac and smooth muscle cells which relaxation of vascular smooth muscle and decreases blood pressure. Valsartan is a hormone antagonist that prevents the hormone angiotensin from causing vasoconstriction by blocking its ability to bind to its receptors. When combined, amlodipine and valsartan provide relaxation of the blood vessels and decrease blood pressure.
