Levetiracetam is an anticonvulsant drug that has proven effective in treating seizures and epilepsy. It accomplishes this by reducing the excitement of neurons in the brain, which helps control seizures and prevention of epilepsy. The drug's mechanism of action begins with its binding to the synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A). This protein is involved in regulating neurotransmitter release and is widely distributed throughout the central nervous system. Binding to SV2A has been shown to reduce neurotransmitter release, which is believed to contribute to its anticonvulsant effects. Levetiracetam additionally binds to voltage-gated sodium channels and GABA receptors, which assists in the suppression of excitatory neurotransmitter activity, such as that of glutamate.
