Atorvastatin is a lipid-lowering agent. Atorvastatin is an HMG Co-A reductase inhibitor, competitively inhibits 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase. This enzyme catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, an early and rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis, this mechanism results in a compensatory increase in the expression of LDL receptors on hepatocyte membranes and a stimulates catabolism of LDL. HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors not only decrease the levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), but they also exhibit pleiotropic properties like; improving endothelial function, reduction in inflammation at the site of the coronary plaque, inhibition of platelet aggregation, and anticoagulant effects.
