Terbinafine hydrochloride is an antifungal agent that works by inhibiting the enzyme squalene epoxidase, disrupting fungal cell membrane synthesis, and causing leaky membranes and the dissipation of ATP reserves, leading to the death of the fungal cell. It is especially effective against dermatophyte fungi, including Trichophyton species such as T. rubrum, the main cause of fungal infections of the skin and nails. Different formulations of terbinafine are available to treat skin and nail fungal infections, depending on the severity and the affected areas, with oral tablets for systemic infections and creams or powders for topical applications. The drug was approved by the FDA in 1992 and is available in generic formulations and under different brand names such as Lamisil Cream, Lamisil Oral, and Terbinex.
